The Pitch of Death: The Bena Tshadi Lightning Tragedy

 

In October 1998, a semi-professional football match in the Democratic Republic of Congo ended in a tragedy so bizarre and terrifying that it divided a nation and sparked accusations of black magic. During a tense 1-1 draw between local club Bena Tshadi and visiting rivals Basanga in the Kasaï region, a blinding flash of lightning struck the wet pitch.

When the thunder cleared, all eleven players of the Bena Tshadi team lay dead or convulsing on the grass. Yet, miraculously, every single player from the opposing Basanga team walked away entirely unscathed.

The Kinshasa daily newspaper, L’Avenir, captured the immediate horror, reporting that the strike killed eleven young men aged between 20 and 35, while injuring thirty spectators. Almost instantly, local communities accused Basanga of using dark magic and hiring witch doctors to summon the lethal bolt. In a region where sports and tribal fetishes frequently intersect, the "supernatural" theory spread like wildfire, fueled by the sheer improbability of one team being wiped out while the other remained untouched.

However, the real-world scientific explanation is far more logical, though no less tragic. The mystery came down to the players' footwear. The Basanga team had taken the field wearing boots with plastic-tipped studs. Bena Tshadi, conversely, were wearing traditional boots with metal-tipped studs.

When the lightning struck the ground, the electrical current surged across the ungrounded, rain-soaked turf. The plastic studs acted as insulators, protecting the Basanga players. But for the Bena Tshadi players, the metal studs acted as perfect conductors, channeling the lethal high-voltage current directly into their bodies.

This freak disaster led FIFA and the Confederation of African Football to strictly regulate and eventually ban metal-tipped studs, ensuring that science, not superstition, had the final word.

Like every Summer and Winter Olympics, and the upcoming UEFA Women's Euro 2025, major sporting events bring more than just excitement. They bring powerful economic shifts to both the participating countries and their host cities. Countries such as Paris and Berlin are seeing billions in infrastructure investment and tourism revenue. Switzerland will also experience the same boost when the women Euros start in July 2025.

However, some economists warn that the long-term benefits will often depend on smart planning and post-event strategy. While Paris 2025 expects a tourism boost of about $3 billion, past examples like Rio 2016 reveal the risks of unused venues and a mountain of debt which kept increasing every year. 

Small local businesses benefit from the surge in demand during these sporting events, but another disadvantage is that cost overruns can also burden taxpayers. Successful host cities tend to focus on legacy projects, housing, transport, and sustainable venues that continue to serve their communities well after the event has even ended. 

When managed well, these events can become a tool for economic rejuvenation, but mismanagement in planning can also leave host cities struggling with financial fallout.
